Abstract	The article discusses the history of diplomatic relations between Greece and Russia, particularly examining the issue of the Greek island of Crete. It draws on letters from A. Lagovsky, a Russian Imperial Consul in Crete. The author comments on the struggle for influence and control over Crete between Greece, the Ottoman Empire, and Great Britain. She particularly explores the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 and examines the Cretan uprising of 1866-1869. The Christian intelligentsia of Crete is also considered.
